Energy Psychology Modalities

There are many different forms of energy psychology methods that can be incorporated into psychotherapy and counselling practice to create energy psychotherapy. Please scroll down to have more information about the different methods.

Psychoanalytic Energy Psychotherapy (PEP)

Psychoanalytic Energy Psychotherapy (PEP) was developed by UK based psychoanalyst Phil Mollon as an integration of concepts and methods from energy psychology into his psychoanalytic practice.  Phil has played a major role in encouraging other clinically trained therapists to integrate energy psychology methods into their therapeutic practice and has written the core text of energy psychotherapy development and practice in his book Psychoanalytic Energy Psychotherapy.  PEP is only taught to those with a prior clinical training.

Advanced Integrative Therapy (AIT)

Advanced Integrative Therapy (AIT) was developed in the US by Dr Asha Clinton, an energy psychotherapist.  AIT is  integrative because it synthesises various psychotherapeutic modalities  e.g:

AIT is only taught to those with a prior clinical training.

Thought Field Therapy (TFT)

TFT was the original energy psychology method which was developed by clinical psychologist Roger Callahan in the US in the 1980’s. There is no requirement to have a prior clinical training to train in this method

Thought Field Therapy was devised by Roger Callahan (1925 – 2013), one of the founding fathers of energy psychology. He found that distress was encoded within the energy system of the body, which he conceptualised as the ‘thought field’, and that the distress could be dissipated and relieved by sequences of tapping on the meridians of traditional Chinese medicine, while that distress was held in mind.

He found that these sequences could be diagnosed through muscle-testing: he also devised set tapping sequences, which he called algorithms, for commonly occurring negative emotional states, such as anxiety and fear.

However he also found that some people were resistant to this treatment. They could be ‘neurologically disorganised’ and he devised simple ways of correcting that, or they could be experiencing what he called ‘psychological reversals’, unconscious blocks to the treatment, akin to Freud’s concept of resistance. He said that these reversals and his methods of overcoming them were his most important discovery, and it is true that all modalities of energy therapy incorporate some way of treating reversals.

TFT is most effective for treating phobias and traumas, and has been used by teams in areas of conflict such as Rwanda, treating refugees and orphans suffering from PTSD.

Training in TFT starts with learning the algorithms at one level of qualification, before moving on to learning how to diagnose particular sequences for each individual client by muscle-testing.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)

EFT is perhaps the best know energy therapy method as it is widely publicised  as a self help method and there is no requirement to have a prior clinical training to train in this. Gary Craig developed this as a simplification of TFT.

Ask and Receive

Ask and Receive  was developed in the US by psychotherapist and naturopathic doctor Sandi Radomski. Her specialist interest is in working with allergies, but her method also has much wider application. There is no requirement to have a prior clinical training to train in this.

Ask and Receive was devised by Sandi Radomski in conjunction with Tom Altaffer while she was working with him to treat his severe allergies. The practice is based on the assumption that an allergy is the body’s inflammatory response to a trauma. With Tom, Sandi found that it was possible to treat allergies simply using intention and words, and they devised a five-phrase protocol accessing ‘that part of my being’ that is linked to a higher state of knowledge to enable healing to take place.

Continuing to develop Ask and Receive they have discovered that the method can also be used to enable any healing intention, and any wished-for outcome, provided that it is in accordance with a person’s highest interest. Working with Pam Altaffer, they have developed three versions of their protocols, Simple, Muscle-testing and Felt Sense Ask and Receive.

The elegance of this method is that it works independently of any spiritual beliefs. In this regard, it is democratic and intended for everyone, for we all have the ability to reach higher states of knowledge to obtain changes in every part of our lives, including greater health, less pain and the release of traumatic experiences.

Tapas Acupressure Technique (TAT)

Tapas Acupressure Technique (TAT) was developed by Tapas Fleming whose clinical background is in acupuncture. There is no requirement to have a prior clinical training to train in this

Dynamic Energetic Healing (DEH)

Dynamic Energetic Healing (DEH) is Howard Brockman’s integration of energy psychology methods with Core Shamanism. His method is laid out in his book Dynamic Energetic Healing: Integrating Core Shamanic Practices With Energy Psychology Applications And Processwork Principles. Howard has given seminars in the UK in the past and many UK energy psychotherapists have benefitted from his teaching.

TRET Trauma Resolution Energy Therapy

TRET is a US based training  which works predominantly with the energy centres, integrating traditional psychodynamic psychotherapy with energy psychology. It provides a way to help clinicians get to and resolve unconscious material. The training comprises level 1 and level 2. For further information see
